JOY POD

Pillow Play Day:  On Wednesday, April 10th, Joy Pod (minus Mr. Kelly's Science Centre Inquiry Students) will be holding their first "Pillow Play Day."   Students are asked to bring in their own pillow from home (with the permission from a parent).  Please do not send your best pillow in case it gets dirty or torn.  We plan to have our "Pillow Play" in the afternoon from 1:20-2:00 (time for reminders of rules and expectations and time for play)

As this is our first event of this kind, students will be creating rules for our "Pillow Play."  Here are some example rules:

  • Soft pillows only!  Try to not send feather pillows as they can definitely cause a mess!
  • Swing lightly, many people will be swinging at once
  • Do not swing at people without pillows
  • Remove eye glasses beforehand
  • Listen to all signals of when to start and when to end
  • Only swing at a person's body (no heads). - we may need to make a time-out bench for those who forget this rule :)

The "Pillow Play" event fits in with our essential question, "How Does Play Connect Us?"  Through our inquiry work, we have been learning and understanding to make play fun, inclusive, challenging, enjoyable and safe, we must have rules.  Back in January students in small groups invented a game and were asked if they needed to make rules?  Some students at that time decided that they didn't need rules to play together.  From many months of exploration we are realizing that rules are important to allow everyone to play and everyone to be safe when we play.  We will post our "Pillow Play" on the blog on Wednesday.  Please check the pictures out!

Inquiry:
*****For inquiry groups who visited their venue visit last week.  Please check out last weeks blog to get a sense of what we have been doing*****

  • Science Centre Inquiry:  This week students will be spending time reflecting on their play-space structure, making modifications and discussing what they would or could change to make their structure more accessible.  As well, students are spending time as a group deciding where each piece of the play-space should be placed on the land and the "best place" to allow for accessibility by all those who would play on our play-space model.  As Mr. Kelly's inquiry group will be coming back to school on Friday with their own play-space we will have to dismantle our play-space and send home the different pieces.  Just a heads up students will be asking to see if they can bring their structure home.
  • Glenbow Museum Inquiry:   Today we made a thank you collage of sketches from our the Glenbow Museum.  We will still be looking at the history of Calgary throughout the week and beginning a pop-up book on the different sites of Calgary (zoo, playgrounds, stampede, movies)
  • Vivo Inquiry:  Today we created an eating chart. recorded what we had for breakfast and lunch and what nutrients are in each of the foods we ate.  We played a student created tag game called "Shark Fish."  We will continue to play student created games for the rest of the week.
