Day Five Open Minds Week 1

Joy Pod

Telus Spark Science Center:
Students today shared and celebrated their play-space with "Dash the Robot." We used Dash to test the different structures and to see how well our structures could hold up to its size and weight.  Students tested Dash going up ramps, sliding down slides and going through the different structures.  We will continue this focus and present the question to the  students, "How accessible is the play-space for the robot?"

After snack we were given a demo at the Inspiration Stage called "Playing with Science and the Senses."  As well, with the help of our parent volunteers we were able to export our play-space structures back to school.  We will be putting our play-space together and working through our design thinking process next week.

A huge shout out to all the volunteers who helped us this week at Open Minds.  We recognize that you too have stuff going on in your day and thank you for being able to help support us.  The students and teachers are super appreciative.  Thank you!

Here are some of our favourite moments this week:

"I liked the Earth and Sky exhibit." - Kylah
"I liked the bed of nails because I'm interested in the whole bed rising up." - Javen
"The water table in the Creative Museum was my favourite because I can move the dam with the blocks." - Kaden
"I liked drinking out of the toilet bowl water fountain." - Austin
"I liked the 63 foot slide because I like to climb." - Chase

On our last day at the Glenbow Museum we had the most amazing speaker, Amy.  She taught us about the different people who helped in the creation of what is now our city of Calgary.  She told us an amazing story about a young NWMP officer who joined the force at the young age of 15.  He was the one to blow the bugle every morning to wake the soldiers up during over the long journey from Ontario to what is now Calgary.  She told us about ranchers and farmers.  She shared artifacts and the students had to guess what they were and how they were used.  She was an amazing story teller and have everyones attention.  A special thanks to Shannon, Sharon, Kristina, Stefan, and Evelyn for volunteering today.
