JOY POD
Math: We are finished our "Patterns and Relations" focus and beginning in the new year we will be focusing our work on "Numeracy" with a focus on addition and subtraction. This is a great car activity to practice when you are traveling from guest to guest this holiday season. Begin to warm up your child's addition and subtraction understanding as this will be our first focus after the break.
Inquiry: We are coming to a close with our first inquiry of the school year. Beginning in the new year our inquiry focus will be on "Play" and "How Play Connects Us?" This inquiry will lead us to student choice on an upcoming field trip venue.
More information to come! We are excited for the possibilities of this inquiry!
Literacy: Please continue to encourage your child to read and write over the Winter Break. Students have worked hard since September and we would love to keep the momentum going with our reading and writing growth. If you have questions regarding your child's reading and writing, please contact your child's responsibility teacher.

Spirit Day "The All Day Pajama Day"
On Thursday, December 20th, we are encouraging students to wear their pajamas to school. We got a glimpse during the "Polar Express Evening" of our pajama attire and encourage students to wear pajamas. Students are NOT expected to wear their pajamas. We are working to continue to build a "Pod Feeling" with our learners and what better way to do that than with pajamas :)

Strategies for Figuring Out Words
Look at the beginning letter. What sound do you hear?
Look at the pictures. Do they help?
Look through the word to the end.
What sound do you hear in the middle?
What sound do you hear at the end?
***If you child doesn't know their letter sounds go back to practicing this skill first***
Think of what word would...
makes sense...
sound right...
match the letters...
Go back to the beginning of the sentence and read it over. Look at the first letter of the hard word and get your mouth ready to say the word...
Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence, and then go back to the word. Think about what you've read and try to figure out what word would make sense.
Ask yourself if what you've read makes sense and matches the letters. This is called "self-monitoring."
If a word does not make sense, you should try to correct it. This is called "Self-correcting."
Look for smaller words within the word
Think of where you may have seen the word before
