Monday, December 17 - Exploring the World of Tapigami

                                 JOY POD

"Your job as teacher gets a whole lot easier when your students are inspired."

What is Beakerhead?  Beakerhead is a Calgary-born smash up of art, science and engineering and uses “design thinking” – a process for identifying problems, generating a prolific realm of possible solutions, testing and experimenting with them, and building things by hand where possible. Others designs are designed to simply inspire – that’s important too. Beakerhead aims to increase the affinity for science and art for all our students.

This year Eric Harvie School was given rolls of tape and the theme "The World in 3018."  During our IGNITE time of the morning, students could choose to join Beakerhead designing and construction.   As a community of learners we created 5 different designs that brings our thinking and imagination of a world in a 1000 years from now.  This is a tricky concept for 6 and 7 year olds to imagine a world 1000 years from now as we are still imagining and understanding the number 100.  Students named the 5 different designs:

The Calgary Tower Fall
Ice Age
Tornado Circle
The Future City
Crushed City

These designs are on display in the Hub.  It is amazing what you can build with tape.  We did use some of our extra bottle cap lids that we had collected for our Recyclable Art project last month.  The lids of these structures are to represent ice and the landscape.  Below is a Youtube video to help or be inspired with using tape as your medium.  Try it!  Try making something, anything with tape.  It is not that easy and yet the students loved playing and exploring.  What a fun experience for us teachers to experience the inventiveness, design and creativity of our amazing Joy Pod learners.

We hope you saw and checked out our designs in the Hub!
