In P.E., we became Santas and reindeers. When we were the Santa, we were pulled on our 'sleigh' by the reindeers and we pulled the sleigh when we were a reindeer.
We enjoyed the choir performance and the last caroling session!
Happy holidays & see you on January 8th, 2019!

JOY POD Math: In the new year we will be focusing our work on"Numeracy" with a focus on addition and subtraction. In grade 1 students will be working on addition and subtraction to 18. In grade 2 students will be working on addition and subtraction to 100. There are lots of math games using cards that build their numeracy skills. Inquiry: We are coming to a close with our first inquiry of the school year. Beginning in the new year our inquiry focus will be on"Play" and "How Play Connects Us?" This inquiry will lead us to student choice on an upcoming field trip venue with Campus Calgary/ Open MInds. More information to come! We are excited for the possibilities of this inquiry! Literacy: Please continue to encourage your child to read and write over the Winter Break. Students have worked hard since September and we would love to keep the momentum going with our reading and writing growth. Today all students in the Joy Pod are bringing home a reading challenge for over the break. We are encouraging all students to read 12 books (or chapters) over the break and the teachers are taking the challenge themselves. Winter is a wonderful time to spend reading on those colder days. There are many ways to access books in our community such as the many Free Little Libraries, the Calgary Public Library and even online through our school website (link to Tumblebooks through the learning commons) ******************************************************************************************* Tomorrow is Spirit Day"The All Day Pajama Day" We are encouraging students to wear their pajamas to school. We got a glimpse during the"Polar Express Evening" of our pajama attire and encourage students to wear pajamas. Students are NOT expected to wear their pajamas. We are working to continue to build a "Pod Feeling" with our learners and what better way to do that than with pajamas :) Please try to keep stuffed animals at home.

Look at the beginning letter. What sound do you hear? Look at the pictures. Do they help? Look through the word to the end. What sound do you hear in the middle? What sound do you hear at the end? ***If you child doesn't know their letter sounds go back to practicing this skill first*** Think of what word would... makes sense... sound right... match the letters... Go back to the beginning of the sentence and read it over. Look at the first letter of the hard word and get your mouth ready to say the word... Skip the word, read to the end of the sentence, and then go back to the word. Think about what you've read and try to figure out what word would make sense. Ask yourself if what you've read makes sense and matches the letters. This is called "self-monitoring." If a word does not make sense, you should try to correct it. This is called "Self-correcting." Look for smaller words within the word Think of where you may have seen the word before ***********************************************************************************************

"Your job as teacher gets a whole lot easier when your students are inspired."
What is Beakerhead?Beakerhead is a Calgary-born smash up of art, science and engineering and uses “design thinking” – a process for identifying problems, generating a prolific realm of possible solutions, testing and experimenting with them, and building things by hand where possible. Others designs are designed to simply inspire – that’s important too. Beakerhead aims to increase the affinity for science and art for all our students.
This year Eric Harvie School was given rolls of tape and the theme "The World in 3018." During our IGNITE time of the morning, students could choose to join Beakerhead designing and construction. As a community of learners we created 5 different designs that brings our thinking and imagination of a world in a 1000 years from now. This is a tricky concept for 6 and 7 year olds to imagine a world 1000 years from now as we are still imagining and understanding the number 100. Students named the 5 different designs:
The Calgary Tower Fall
Ice Age
Tornado Circle
The Future City
Crushed City
These designs are on display in the Hub. It is amazing what you can build with tape. We did use some of our extra bottle cap lids that we had collected for our Recyclable Art project last month. The lids of these structures are to represent ice and the landscape. Below is a Youtube video to help or be inspired with using tape as your medium. Try it! Try making something, anything with tape. It is not that easy and yet the students loved playing and exploring. What a fun experience for us teachers to experience the inventiveness, design and creativity of our amazing Joy Pod learners.
We hope you saw and checked out our designs in the Hub!
******************************************************************************************************** We are very thankful and proud of the Eric Harvie students and families for spreading joy beyond our school and making a difference in our community. Donated items were dropped off at the Mustard Seed on Saturday, December 15, 2018.

Physical Education:All of the Joy Pod students participate in the same physical education activities. Please ask your child to share their favorite activity that they have been playing and/or learning. Ms. Galbraith, one of our U of C student teachers has been teaching the physical education classes on Monday's and Thursday's. Unfortunately, our last day with our student teachers, Joanne and Sarah will be on Friday, December 14th. However, we are fortunate to have them return to work with Joy Pod students again in their final semester in February. If you happen to see them when you come on Friday for the drumming sharing, please take a moment to thank these fine ladies for all their hard work. We are fortunate to have talented future teachers working with our students.
Suggested Writing Activities at Home:All students would benefit over Winter Break from extra time and practice writing. Here are a few suggestions:
Provide writing materials of all kinds, colors, textures and sizes, pens, pencils, felt tip pens, post-its. Whatever will invite your writer to explore writing in original, colorful ways
Encourage revision, add highlighting pens, scissors, and glue or tape to your list of writing materials. These materials encourage adding, deleting, cutting and putting together ideas in different ways
Provide a print-rich environment in your home with magazines, books, maps, cookbooks to name a few
Encourage letter writing or thank-you notes for developing a sense of voice, audience and purpose. Letters to relatives or friends for the gifts received this holiday season
Have your child help write grocery lists
Help your child create a writer's notebook to document observations, quotes, favorite words or future writing ideas
Play an alliteration game:The first person begins a sentence and everyone must continue the sentence using the same beginning letter or sound. For example, "Calgary cats" then the next person could say "Calgary cats can't" and the next person could say "Calgary cats can't count" and so on.
Our students continue to learn songs to share with you on the morning of December 14thin a similar fashion to our performances from Sound Kreations. The performance schedule is provided below:
