Wednesday October 31st

Joy Pod

Happy Halloween

Tips For parents:Do not use masks. Masks make it hard for children to see what’s around them, including cars.

Try a hypoallergenic (less likely to cause an allergic reaction), non-toxic make-up kit instead.

Make or buy costumes in light-coloured material.

Place strips of reflective tape on the back and front of costumes, so that drivers can better see your child.

Costumes should fit properly to prevent trips and falls. Avoid items such as oversized shoes, high heels, long dresses and long capes.

Dress your child for the weather. Add layers if needed.

Put your child’s name, address and phone number on his costume.

Children under 10 should be accompanied by an adult for trick or treating. By the age of 10, some children are ready to go trick-or-treating with a group of friends.

Keep in mind that gum and hard candy can pose a choking risk for young children.

Remove make-up before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.

Tuesday, October 30th

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out with Fun Snack today.

Today in the Joy Pod, we worked on reading in our literacy groups. We had day two of our pattern groups in math. Ask your child what they did today.  We had gym and Cross Curricular time too.

Tomorrow is Halloween.  Students are invited to dress up if they want.  Costumes need to be school appropriate and we are asking students not to bring "Props" or things that they need to carry or hold.  It is a regular learning day for a good portion of the day and these items become a distraction.  Students are asked not to wear masks.  Students are asking NOT TO BRING CANDY for their friends.

Joy Pod
Today we began working on our Peace Assembly that will take place at the end of November. Students learned a song and created a page in their visual journal on what brings them joy.  Please ask your child to share what brings them joy?

Please ask your child to share what types of things they are learning when they work with their literacy teacher.  Today, we began our focus in math on the unit of "Patterns." We've included the "I Can" statements for Grade 1 and Grade 2 patterns below.

Grade 1
I can show my understanding of repeating patterns using many different ways
I can sort objects and explain the sorting rule
I can show equal and use the equal symbol

Grade 2

Ways to Help Your Child with Reading at Home

When your child comes to a word they don't know:
-wait for a few seconds to allow them to try and figure the word out on their own
-encourage them to "sound out" the letters, look for a part of the word they already know or a small word inside a bigger word
-look at the pictures for clues
-try a word and continue reading to the end of the line and see if it makes sense
-tell them the word and have them repeat it

Prompts that might help:
"What would make sense there?"
"What do you think that word could be?"
"Is there a part of the word you already know?"
"Look at how the word begins. Try and keep going."
"Does the picture give you a clue?"

*Praise your child's effort when they read.  Especially when they correct a mistake, try an unfamiliar or difficult word and ask questions about the book.

***Please don't correct every mistake if the word they read doesn't affect the meaning of the sentence.***

Thursday, October 25, 2018

Today, we read The Boy Called Bat and sketched a part of the story. In fine arts, we acted out to be a melting ice cream cone and we passed "Whoosh" to each other and Mr.Kelly while standing in a circle. We also played a gamed called 'Who Let The Dogs Out' in P.E. Some of us really enjoyed Fun Lunch!

More Information on Reading From Mrs. Kinsman's Latest Blog:    The good news is that planning to nurture great readers requires some very simple input from parents that will yield tremendous results :)
  •  Read something aloud every day with your child - a story, a poem, a recipe, a nursery rhyme, a newspaper headline, a catalogue description - anything that lets your child know reading is valuable and worth doing every day
  • Rhyme, rhyme, rhyme - repeat nursery rhymes, share giggles over riddles or tongue twisters, share puns with your 'tweens & teens - have fun with words as often as you can
  • Encourage your child to choose books to read with you - small children will often choose the same book many times over until they know the words by heart - these are the early roots of reading, understanding that particular words belong to a specific story.  As children grow in reading, they will begin to choose favourite authors or topics, non-fiction or fiction stories - and be more than willing to share them with Mom and Dad
  • Every child in CBE schools - and every Calgarian - is able to obtain a free library card. Use it with your child - learn how to browse books, choose a book for a good reason, get to know favourite authors, share ideas with each other about the books you share together
  • Use your tablet apps as teaching tools - there are many, many letter, letter sounds, numbers, words, patterns and rhyming apps that will entertain and engage your child while teaching them how to smoosh letters together to make words, label pictures with words, identify letter sounds, etc - and for older children, there are numerous story apps, fan fiction sites and always thousands of books available for purchase on Kindles and ibooks - not to mention the audio book apps :)
  • Celebrate accomplishments!  When your child reads a book by themselves, talk about it, dance about it, track it in a journal, sticker book or on a white board - make a fuss that acknowledges this is hard work and you are very proud of their efforts :) Make a video of them talking about their book - or reading it - and share with grandparents or relatives or friends - readers are worth it!  I have videos of my children and grandchildren as they grew as readers - from turning pages and telling stories to triumphantly sharing their 'all by myself' first reads - it is as lovely to treasure the first moments in reading as it is to treasure their first steps :)

Hi Eric Harvie Families!

Our first fundraising campaign for the school year has begun! Your children should have come home with info and an Order Form todayThis campaign runs from Oct 22-Nov 5th!

FundScrip is an innovative program that lets you earn cash rebates for our school based on everyday things that you already buy - groceries, gas, restaurants, apparel and other household items! Gift cards are bought at face value and a percentage of every card purchased is contributed to our school's fundraising efforts!

Consider purchasing gift cards for your weekly grocery shops, use as a budgeting tool for the upcoming holiday season to help you stay on track of what you're spending,  purchase them as gifts, and consider adding in a few dollars for the school's upcoming 'Familes Helping Families' campaign. All of the profits from this campaign will go back to our school for programming and resources for our kids!

You can see the entire list of cards available online at www.fundscrip.com (our Group Invite code is: GQH6VD)

If you have any questions please email ehsfundraisingdirector@gmail.com.

Ways to Help Your Child with Reading at Home

Before you read:
-Make reading a part of your daily routine
-Find a cozy place to read together
-Have your child choose a book that interests them
-Talk about the book, read the title, look and talk about the pictures

Reading together:
-Hold the book so both of you can see the words and pictures
-Point to each word as you read
-Take turns reading, gradually letting your child read more as they become confident
-Stop occasionally and talk about what you are reading, how the characters might feel, what do you think might happen next and discuss new vocabulary
-Read and reread your child's favorites

Next Week:
What to do when your child comes to a word they don't know...we will share some helpful strategies (hint hint one of the strategies is NOT to cover pictures in a story.  Children need those pictures to support their reading and understanding)

Welcome to the Weekend!

Friday in Joy Pod continues to be busy with many experiences that build our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

We were excited to have Ms. Palmer from Glenbow Ranch Foundation come and speak to us about the Glenbow Ranch in anticipation of the work that we will be doing there on Tuesday.

Please return all Glenbow Ranch Permission Forms.

The great weather continues to make our movement breaks enjoyable outside.

We all had the opportunity to work on literacy in our Daily Five groups.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our Student Led Learning Walk and Sound Kreation Performance

Below is the link to watch the video that the students created around physical literacy.

Building the learning tools and strategies in our students’ Learners’ Toolkits is the primary work of the school in language literacy, math literacy, science, social studies, physical literacy, place-based literacy, and both critical and creative thinking to support students in exploring, creating, investigating, questioning and designing inquiries, wonders and projects  grounded in curricular objectives.

Today in the Joy Pod we continued to work on reading and writing.  We also started to look at human impact on Coyotes as we get ready to go to Glenbow Ranch next week. Ask your child about the video we watched of a coyote in Nose Hill Park.  We worked with a group to record what we Need to know about Coyotes, What we were excited about, where we stand on the issue and any suggestions we have and what we are worried about when we think about coyotes.  It was a great discussion and brainstorming session.
