JOY POD

Writing:  All students have been working on using their own ideas to create authentic writing.  We have a variety of writers in Joy Pod and students are learning to identify an area of growth that fits best with their learning.  For some of our learners, they are working on adding descriptive words to improve writing, write a narrative piece of writing including a beginning, middle and end and including a setting and characters.  For other learners, they are working on (below).  It is important for our writers to know what are their next steps.  We continue to help our students to be able to identify their goals and the strategies to help achieve these goals.

I can add or take away words or ideas so my writing makes sense
Important to know or do:
Check for obvious spelling errors and missing words
Reflect on own and others’ work
I can print letters properly from left to right
I can put proper spacing between words
I can play with word patterns and word families to learn new words.
Important to know or do:
Identify and use an increasing number of words and phrases related to personal interests and topics of study

Inquiry: These are some of the skills we have touched on with the students during our most recent inquiry work.

 Inquiry
I can ask questions to find out information.
Important to know or do:
-Predict what they think will happen or what they might find.
-Manipulate materials and make observations that are relevant to questions asked.
-Recognize and describe steps followed, based on independent activity, on directed activity and on observing the activity of others.
-Describe what was observed, using pictures and oral language.
-Identify questions being investigated and identify what was learned about each question.
-Identify new questions that arise from what was learned.
-I can ask questions that help me understand
-I can answer questions on more than one way
-I can predict and make a guess
-I can do things following the steps others have given me
Problem Solving
I can ask new questions about what I have learned.
Important to know or do:
-Identify the problem or task: What structure do we need to make?
-Attempt, with guidance, one or more strategies to complete the task.
-Engage in all parts of the task.
-Identify materials used.
-Recognize and describe steps followed, based on independent activity, on directed activity and on observing the activity of others.
-Describe the product of the activity, using pictures and oral language.
-Identify processes by which the product was made.
-Identify how the product might be used.
-I can try many different ways to complete tasks
-I can do all parts of a task and let others give me ideas
- I can draw, write or tell about what I build
-I can write, draw and tell about how I built something and what it is like

BOTTLE CAPS:
The bottle cap art that we worked on before Winter Break is not quite finished and we are hoping to add the last few lids that are needed.  Please help us out.  We are looking for Brown, Green, Blue, Red and Orange plastic lids.  Thank you in advance!

Parent/Student/Teacher Conference:
Please sign up for a conference time (if you haven't done this yet) to see both your child's classroom work and the "key" teacher who could help share your child's learning.  As these conferences are  "student-led" we ask that students attend these conferences and we ask that parents plan to spend time looking and discussing your child's learning.  If you attended our "Joy of Play" Open House you will have noticed that our students love sharing their learning and accomplishments and love even more to hear proud parents rave about their child's work.

Here is a great blog post from Principal Fero entitled  "Parents, Win Your Student Led Conference
This was attached to the Connect Monday
Please take a look it is a wonderful read!

GRADE 1:   Develop Number Sense
I can count from 0 to 100.
I can show my understanding of counting in many ways.
I can draw and tell about numbers up to 20.
I can identify a number up to 20 that is one or two more or one or two less
I can show my understanding of addition of numbers up to 20.
I can show my understanding of subtraction of number up to 20.
I can tell about and use many different mental mathematics strategies to add or subtract to 18.
Important to know or do:
Compare sets containing up to 20 elements using:  referents, one-to-one correspondence
Demonstrate an understanding of conservation of numbers
Worth being familiar with:
Recognize at a glance and name familiar arrangements of 1 to 10 objects or dots
Estimate quantities to 20 by using referents

GRADE 2: Develop Number Sense
I can say numbers in order from 0 to 100 by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s forward and backward.
I can tell if a number is even or odd.
I can write, draw or tell about numbers to 100.
I can show and explain what happens when zero is added or subtracted.
I can show my understanding of adding and subtracting with answers up to 100.
I can use mental mathematics strategies to adding and subtracting

Number fact fluency refers to a student’s ability to think efficientlyaccurately and flexibly towards mastery using numbers. Students with strong number sense are able to manipulate numbers and understand how to use various strategies to solve problems. Students develop their number fluency along a continuum of learning that starts with basic counting skills and leads to efficient strategies that may include recall. Recall is the ability to effortlessly know the answer as a result of developing strategies and number relationships. The following tables identify some of the strategies students use when they are solving number facts mentally. The arrow indicates how students progress as they move towards fluency. A number fact is defined as addition and subtraction expressions up to 20.

Addition and Subtraction Number Fact Assessment

SubitizeSee a set of objects and know how many there are without counting.
Counting allCounting each object one at a time.

Counting on / Counting backStart with one quantity and count up / down by the second number.
Skip countingCounting forwards or backwards by a number other than one.
Counting on / back from larger number
Start with the larger quantity and count up/down by the other number.
Using a known fact Choosing a nearby fact and adjusting.
Near doubles -
Adjusting the calculation using doubles such as 5 + 7, a student might take 1 from 7 and add it to the 5 to make 6 + 6.

Using the 5 or 10 anchor Adding to make 5 or 10 or splitting the number by subtracting to make 5 or 10.
Recall number facts Automatically knowing the answer as a result of developing strategies and understanding number relationships.

Students will be bringing home notices on Friday, March 15th, indicating the names of the Pod teacher(s) who are currently most connected to students for math and literacy (reading). Families will book conferences with the indicated teacher(s) in order to ensure they are appropriately connected to their child’s literacy and math learning. Part of the Conference experience will also provide families with the opportunity to explore the learning that has been happening within the Pod with your child as the leader. Families will also be able to informally connect with other Pod teachers when they are available.
