Outcome 8:
Identify the number up to 20 that is:
-one more
-two more
-one less
-two less

Outcome 9:
Demonstrate addition with answers to 20 and corresponding subtraction facts (mathematical language, creating and solving problems, modeling, recording process)

Outcome 10:

Thank You for Another Wonderful Week in Joy Pod,

Today we had the AM Kindergarten Assembly.  It is always a treat to have a Peace Assembly but even more when it is performed by our youngest learners at Eric Harvie School.  Ask you child about the assembly.  What part of the assembly did you find most interesting?  What do you think that the kindergarten students wanted us to learn from their assembly?

The rest of the morning all members of Joy Pod had literacy and math.  Each group within Joy Pod are working on a variety of reading strategies.  Ask your child what strategy they are currently working on.  This can be done by asking them teach you what they learned in literacy (some may know it as Daily Five time.)

In Chickadee we are currently looking at finding books that we LOVE to build our reading stamina.  The students asked if we could share some of our ways to find books that are "like" the ones that are our favourites.   We have two strategies:
1.)  Go into Amazon.ca  Type in the book title in the search bar, for example:  Princess in Black. When you scroll down they will list all the Princess in Black books and then give you suggestions like:  Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Ivy and Bean,  Mia Mayhem, etc.
2.)  This website also will give suggestions to some of the more popular books and series
https://whatshouldireadnext.com/

Just some ideas if you get stuck when looking for ideas when you child has read EVERY book in their favourite series.

Cross-Curricular Time (CCT): Some of us read a book called "Audrey". Audrey's class was performing a play, but kids in her class forgot their lines. However, Audrey helped her classmates remember the lines and she saved the play!
Some of us played the Thumb Ball game. Ask me how to play the Thumb Ball game!

InquiryWe continued our inquiry focus through the lens of "Play."  Students worked in different groups depending on their choice: photography, sketching, wire sculptures or playdoh sculptures.

Our overarching question for the rest of the school year will be "How Play Connects Us?"  This inquiry will lead us to student choice on an upcoming field trip venue with Campus Calgary/ Open Minds.
More information to come!  We are excited for the possibilities of this inquiry!

Logging onto IRIS
Iris
Iris is a web-based teaching and learning application consisting of student learning plans, learner profiles, resource library and teacher and administrator workspaces. Iris brings together student voice, learning data, and best research in supporting teachers and administrators in making well-informed instructional decisions for each student.
The student learning plan is the primary space for students to be able to document and articulate personal learning processes. Iris supports students in developing and communicating their ongoing understandings as a learner, creating goals and exploring strategies that will enable them to be successful in their learning.
Logging on to Iris
1. You may find a link to Iris on the
Eric Harvie School homepage.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find useful links including Iris.

A file, such as a photo or document, may be uploaded.
A note about the learning being demonstrated may be added as well.
The panel on the right of the page offers advice about what are appropriate and effective artifacts.
Students are encouraged to reflect, set goals, and find strategies to help them learn.
When a student adds to their Learning Plan, the right panel will offer prompts to assist the student in choosing appropriate content.
Here are some images that show how to do this... sorry they are so small.

Math: Ask your child how they answered our math question today:
"There are seven shirts hanging on a clothesline.  Some are white and some are blue.
There are no other colours.
How many of each colour shirt might there be?"
We have been working with students on showing different ways to organize their thinking using charts, pictures and/or equations.  We will continue our focus on "Number Sense" tomorrow.

Inquiry: Today students gathered to learn some basic acting skills and Create a Tableau on play. Students pretended to play basketball or play a board game or eat ice cream.  Students are learning that the viewer should be able to figure out what a student is doing using only actions (not talking).

Using the design process, students will begin to plan and create "play" through a variety of mediums (playdoh, wire/tinfoil, photography, sketching).  This will help us connect to our overarching question,  "How Play Connects Us?"

Math:  Students were given a problem solving question:

You walk into a room and see a bed.
On the bed there are two dogs, four cats, a giraffe, five cows and a duck.
There are also three chickens flying above the bed.
How many legs are in the room?
Explain and show how you came up with your answer.

Ask your child how they came up with their answer.  Some of the queries with the discussions were "Do you count the legs of the bed?"  Or "do I count the legs of "you?"  Thought provoking!

Inquiry:  We continued our inquiry focus through the lens of "Play."  Today, students created a list of activities that they could play both outside and inside and used a Venn diagram to organize and represent their learning about play that happens both inside and outside.  The students found out that many of the activities that we play can happen both inside and outside.
Our overarching question for the rest of the school year will be "How Play Connects Us?"  This inquiry will lead us to student choice on an upcoming field trip venue with Campus Calgary/ Open MInds.
More information to come!  We are excited for the possibilities of this inquiry!
