Inquiry:
Last week, students were given three different kinds of pictures to circle based on their interests.  Some of the pictures had to do with physical activity, science and nature and the past and artifacts.  Based on the pictures that students circled we were able to create a variety of new inquiry groups.  Students will travel with their inquiry group on their Open Minds field trip.

*Physical activity pictures: Students will be going to VIVO
*Past and artifact pictures: Students will be going to the Glenbow Museum
*Science and nature pictures: Students will be going to the Science Center

The dates of these different Open Minds venue visits will be shared soon and the signing up of volunteers as well.  Stay tuned!
Ask your child, which new inquiry group they began today.  Each inquiry group will have the same driving question "How Does Play Connect Us?"  The different venues allows students to experience and look at play through different lens.  We look forward to sharing our different experiences.

Writing:
During our writing each day we have been working with the students on "Writer's Workshop" which is a student-centered framework for teaching writing to children.  It is based on the idea that students learn to write best when they write often and on topics of their own choosing.  The steps within this framework are plan, draft, edit, revise, publish.  We will be working with this framework for the rest of the school year.

How Can You Encourage Your Child As A Writer?
Here are a few suggestions to help with your child's development as writers:

-Make writing tools and writing surfaces available for your child to use (pencils, crayons, markers, lined and unlined paper)
-Help your child to recognize the letters of the alphabet
-Talk with your child about the different ideas that they could write about, such as home activities, TV programs, games, books, sports to name just a few.
-Encourage your child to practice writing the alphabet letters and number symbols.

Friday, January 25, 2019

Today was a "Wonder"-ful Day!  We had our first Wonder Time of the year today. Please ask your child about their choices for Wonder Time.  Some questions that may help you with this conversation:
1.) Where did you go for Wonder Time?
2.)  What was the most exciting part of your time there?
3.)  Have you thought about where you would like to go on the next Wonder Time?

There were lots of choices for investigations:  Lego, Zentangles, Winter Provocations, Math Manipulatives, Popsicle Investigations, Outdoor Exploration, Maps and so much more.

Just a reminder to please send back your communication folders.  Parents please check the contents as some of our folders are getting pretty full.

Inquiry: Students were given the challenge of working with others to create or invent a game using one of the following items a wiffle ball, bean bag, hula hoop, pool noodle or a spot "rubber dot".  Ask your child what piece of equipment they used and what game them came up with.  It was a blast to watch them work together.

Demonstrate an understanding of conservation of number

Outcome 8:
Identify the number up to 20 that is:
-one more
-two more
-one less
-two less

Outcome 9:
Demonstrate addition with answers to 20 and corresponding subtraction facts (mathematical language, creating and solving problems, modeling, recording process)

Outcome 10:
Describe and use mental mathematics strategies for basic addition and subtraction facts

Grade 2:
Outcome 1:
Number Sequence:
-2’s, 5’s, 10’s forward and backward

Describe order using ordinal numbers (up to tenth)

Outcome 4:
Represent and describe numbers to 100

Outcome 5:
Compare and order numbers up to 100

Outcome 6:
Estimate quantities to 100

 Outcome 7:
Illustrate meaning of place value for numerals to 100

 Outcome 8:
Demonstrate and explain effect of adding zero or subtracting zero

Outcome 9:
Demonstrate addition (1 and 2 digit numerals) with answers to 100
-personal strategies using manipulatives or not
-creating and solving problems
-understanding that the order which numbers are added does not affect the sum)
-understanding that grouping a set of numbers in different ways does not affect the sum
-explaining the order which numbers are subtracted may affect the difference

Outcome 10:
Apply mental mathematics strategies for basic addition facts and related subtraction facts to 18

Thank You for Another Wonderful Week in Joy Pod,

Today we had the AM Kindergarten Assembly.  It is always a treat to have a Peace Assembly but even more when it is performed by our youngest learners at Eric Harvie School.  Ask you child about the assembly.  What part of the assembly did you find most interesting?  What do you think that the kindergarten students wanted us to learn from their assembly?

The rest of the morning all members of Joy Pod had literacy and math.  Each group within Joy Pod are working on a variety of reading strategies.  Ask your child what strategy they are currently working on.  This can be done by asking them teach you what they learned in literacy (some may know it as Daily Five time.)

In Chickadee we are currently looking at finding books that we LOVE to build our reading stamina.  The students asked if we could share some of our ways to find books that are "like" the ones that are our favourites.   We have two strategies:
1.)  Go into Amazon.ca  Type in the book title in the search bar, for example:  Princess in Black. When you scroll down they will list all the Princess in Black books and then give you suggestions like:  Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Ivy and Bean,  Mia Mayhem, etc.
2.)  This website also will give suggestions to some of the more popular books and series
https://whatshouldireadnext.com/

Just some ideas if you get stuck when looking for ideas when you child has read EVERY book in their favourite series.
