Joy Pod is going SWIMMING on Monday (Feb.4th)!!
To help children, please send your child to school with their swim suit on underneath their clothing on swim days. Please make sure your child is wearing clothes he/she can easily change into afterwards (i.e. track suit/sweatshirt/jogging pants).  Please pack snacks that can be easily eaten in about 5 minutes!
Please pack the following items in your child's swim bag:

  • A towel
  • Underwear
  • Plastic bag for a wet bathing suit/towel (optional)
  • Hairbrush (optional)
  • Goggles (optional)
  • Hair tie (long hair must be tied back)
  • Swimming cap (optional)

To help everyone in Joy Pod have a successful week of swimming:
- Please check your child's swimming bag daily to dry out their towel and swim suit
- Loose-fitting clothing will be preferred, as putting leggings/skinny jeans etc. on wet bodies can be very difficult!

Valentine's Day:

On Wednesday, February 13, Joy Pod students are encouraged to bring in personalized Valentine cards to hand out in their responsibility classes.  Your child's responsibility teacher will be sending an email in the next couple of days to let you know the student first names in their room.  We ask that if students are bringing Valentine cards that they bring enough Valentine cards for all students in the classroom.  If your child plans to make their own Valentine cards and you are in need of supplies, please let your responsibility teacher know as we want to make sure that all children have access to bringing in Valentine cards.  Students will be able to hand out their Valentine cards in the afternoon of February 13th and enjoy reading the cards from their peers.
******Please do not send in snacks as we have many children in the Joy Pod with serious food allergies.

Writing:

How Can You Encourage Your Child As A Writer?
Here are a few more suggestions to help with your child's development as a writer:

-Write down stories that your child dictates to you and then read them back to your child to help make the connection between reading and writing)
-Celebrate your child's writing efforts by displaying their writing on the refrigerator or in a frame
-Write to your child.  Create messages for fun, to share important news, put these messages in your child's lunch bag, under their pillow or on the refrigerator.
-Write alongside your child.  While your child is writing, you can sit with them and write your own lists, notes, letters.  Let your child see you do your writing that you may have to do from work or in your business.

Inquiry:
Last week, students were given three different kinds of pictures to circle based on their interests.  Some of the pictures had to do with physical activity, science and nature and the past and artifacts.  Based on the pictures that students circled we were able to create a variety of new inquiry groups.  Students will travel with their inquiry group on their Open Minds field trip.

*Physical activity pictures: Students will be going to VIVO
*Past and artifact pictures: Students will be going to the Glenbow Museum
*Science and nature pictures: Students will be going to the Science Center

The dates of these different Open Minds venue visits will be shared soon and the signing up of volunteers as well.  Stay tuned!
Ask your child, which new inquiry group they began today.  Each inquiry group will have the same driving question "How Does Play Connect Us?"  The different venues allows students to experience and look at play through different lens.  We look forward to sharing our different experiences.

Writing:
During our writing each day we have been working with the students on "Writer's Workshop" which is a student-centered framework for teaching writing to children.  It is based on the idea that students learn to write best when they write often and on topics of their own choosing.  The steps within this framework are plan, draft, edit, revise, publish.  We will be working with this framework for the rest of the school year.

How Can You Encourage Your Child As A Writer?
Here are a few suggestions to help with your child's development as writers:

-Make writing tools and writing surfaces available for your child to use (pencils, crayons, markers, lined and unlined paper)
-Help your child to recognize the letters of the alphabet
-Talk with your child about the different ideas that they could write about, such as home activities, TV programs, games, books, sports to name just a few.
-Encourage your child to practice writing the alphabet letters and number symbols.

Friday, January 25, 2019

Today was a "Wonder"-ful Day!  We had our first Wonder Time of the year today. Please ask your child about their choices for Wonder Time.  Some questions that may help you with this conversation:
1.) Where did you go for Wonder Time?
2.)  What was the most exciting part of your time there?
3.)  Have you thought about where you would like to go on the next Wonder Time?

There were lots of choices for investigations:  Lego, Zentangles, Winter Provocations, Math Manipulatives, Popsicle Investigations, Outdoor Exploration, Maps and so much more.

Just a reminder to please send back your communication folders.  Parents please check the contents as some of our folders are getting pretty full.

Inquiry: Students were given the challenge of working with others to create or invent a game using one of the following items a wiffle ball, bean bag, hula hoop, pool noodle or a spot "rubber dot".  Ask your child what piece of equipment they used and what game them came up with.  It was a blast to watch them work together.
