Monday, May 6th, 2019

All members of Joy Pod spent time with our Artist in Residence on their puppets today.  The puppets are beginning to take form and we are looking at how to incorporate our hard work into our chosen stories.

OUR THIRD ANNUAL GLAZED 8 DONUT RACE WILL TAKE PLACE SUNDAY, 
JUNE 2, 2019! 

The Glazed 8 is a race of varying lengths for kids, adults, families, and friends that combine two of the best activities around: running & eating donuts. And, the bonus of the event is that all money raised goes towards our community - specifically, Eric Harvie Elementary School and new this year, Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation. We are in the third year of the event, have donated close to $4000 and eaten nearly 500 donuts and 2500 Timbits!

The museum inquiry group will be working with an artist to make puppets that will help tell the story of Calgary’s past.  We are in need of some volunteers to help students, in particular using the hot glue guns.  If you are able to volunteer and have an up to date police clearance on file at the school please email Ms. Ross at kmross@cbe.ab.ca   

The dates are:
Monday May 13 from 12:15-1:05
Wednesday May 15 from 8:30-9:20

Another week has come and gone in Joy Pod.  We have been very busy with so many projects.  Our puppets will be amazing and the work we will be doing with them over the month will be shared with all of you on May 23rd which will be our final Student Led Learning Walk.
We are connecting our puppet work with our Inquiries and our Open Minds experiences.

We continue to look at numbers and operations in math.  Each of the four math groups are focusing on the strategies that meet each child's needs in their mathematical development.  Students learn and retain different addition and subtraction strategies that fit their particular level of development.  If you would like to see the continuum of student learning, check out the following video.

Now that it is May the count down in on. There are 38 days of school left for this school year.  We still have lots planned... Puppet Making, Just like you Presentations, a Student Led Learning Walk, a Farm Field Trip, Two more Roots of Empathy Baby Visits, and a Film Festival.  Wow are we going to be busy!!!!!

Today in the Joy Pod, Museum and Vivo Inquiry Groups worked on Making Puppets.  They are going to be amazing and we can't wait to show you them and the process at the Student Led Learning Walk later this month.  

All four classes started working on 2D Shapes and 3D Objects. The Outcomes for this strand of the curriculum are as follows: 
Grade 1
Describe the characteristics of 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, and analyze the relationships among them.
Specific Outcomes
2. Sort 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, using one attribute, and explain the sorting rule. [C, CN, R, V]
3. Replicate composite 2-D shapes and 3-D objects. [CN, PS, V]
4. Compare 2-D shapes to parts of 3-D objects in the environment. [C, CN, V]
Grade 2

Thanks to all the students who participated in  'Hats Off for Mental Health Day' to raise awareness of the importance of positive mental health. You can learn more about Hats On! For Mental Health by visiting canwetalk.ca, a website sponsored by the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Canadian Mental Health Association that includes a variety of mental health resources for schools.

 The focus on mental health promotion continues during Mental Health Week, which is being held this year from May 6 to 10. Students who are mentally healthy are resilient and better able to learn, achieve success and build healthy relationships.
