JOY POD

Physical Education: All of the Joy Pod students participate in the same physical education activities.  Please ask your child to share their favorite activity that they have been playing and/or learning.  Ms. Galbraith, one of our U of C student teachers has been teaching the physical education classes on Monday's and Thursday's.  Unfortunately, our last day with our student teachers, Joanne and Sarah will be on Friday, December 14th.  However, we are fortunate to have them return to work with Joy Pod students again in their final semester in February.  If you happen to see them when you come on Friday for the drumming sharing, please take a moment to thank these fine ladies for all their hard work.  We are fortunate to have talented future teachers working with our students.

Suggested Writing Activities at Home: All students would benefit over Winter Break from extra time and practice writing. Here are a few suggestions:
  • Provide writing materials of all kinds, colors, textures and sizes, pens, pencils, felt tip pens, post-its.  Whatever will invite your writer to explore writing in original, colorful ways
  • Encourage revision, add highlighting pens, scissors, and glue or tape to your list of writing materials.  These materials encourage adding, deleting, cutting and putting together ideas in different ways
  • Provide a print-rich environment in your home with magazines, books, maps, cookbooks to name a few
  • Encourage letter writing or thank-you notes for developing a sense of voice, audience and purpose.  Letters to relatives or friends for the gifts received this holiday season
  • Have your child help write grocery lists
  • Help your child create a writer's notebook to document observations, quotes, favorite words or future writing ideas
  • Play an alliteration game: The first person begins a sentence and everyone must continue the sentence using the same beginning letter or sound.  For example, "Calgary cats" then the next person could say "Calgary cats can't" and the next person could say "Calgary cats can't count" and so on.

JOY POD

Drumming: Today we continued our drumming practice and learning a variety of drumming patterns.  One of the patterns we have learned is "chocolate milk and potato chips."  Students are encouraged to say the beat as we drum. We are looking forward to sharing our learning on Friday.

Inquiry:  Regardless of what inquiry topics students chose to learn about this reporting period, we have been focusing on the general learner expectations of inquiry, problem solving and attitudes of science.  Below are the general learner expectations of our learning:
  • Bring focus to investigative activities, based on student questions
  • Describe materials and objects that have been observed and manipulated, and identify what was done and found out
  • Construct, with guidance, an object that achieves a given purpose, using materials that are provided
  • Ask questions that lead to exploration and investigation
  • Predict what they think will happen or what they might find
  • Manipulate materials and make observations that are relevant to questions asked
  • Identify materials used
  • Recognize and describe steps followed, based on independent activity, on directed activity and on observing the activity of others
  • Describe what was observed, using pictures and oral language
  • Identify questions being investigated and identify what was learned about each question
  • Identify new questions that arise from what was learned
  • Demonstrate positive attitudes for what is being studied
***Students in Grade 1 and 2 show independence in exploratory activities but require teacher direction in developing a structured approach to investigating questions and problems***
