Parents of Grade Two Students:
All missed Grade 2 students who parents gave permission to participate in the University of Calgary, regarding the impact of fluoridation in the city's water will be seen on Nov. 19.  Should any parents of Grade 2 students who did not initially provide consent but are now interested in participating in the study on Nov. 19, please contact Ms. Low at kmlow@cbe.ab.ca for a permission form.

Donations Needed!
Joy Pod is in need of some school-appropriate liquids (may include but not limited to household chemicals, oil, sauce, juice, pop, or milk). It would be okay if the containers have been opened and part of content has been used/poured out. We plan to use collected liquids in inquiry lessons. Please ensure that liquids that you send are in their original containers to ensure that we can handle these in a safe manner. Thank you!

We continue to look for plastic bottle cap lids (brown, white/clear, yellow, orange, green, red, blue and black) to use in a recyclable art project.  These lids can be found on pop bottles, milk jugs and other drinks.  Please think of us when recycling these lids...we will need a TON!!!
Thank you!

Wednesday November 14th

Hello,

Joy Pod
Inquiry: Students continued to work on the their inquiry using one of the lens: color, nature, animals or liquids.  Through the use of seven of the interconnected learning strategies with our students we are working to transform our learning.  The strategies include:
- Learning Locally: Our community is the classroom and our learning is grounded in the experiences that are happening around us.
- Integrated learning: Learning a variety of subjects and skills through a topic allows our students to have a deeper understanding.
- Acting on Learning: Applying what we are learning to enhance our community.
- Considering Alternate Perspectives:  Allowing our students the opportunity to hear differing views encourages critical thinking of our students.
- Inquiry:  Students begin to uncover the curriculum in an interesting way.
- Sharing the Responsibility of Learning: Leads our students to being able and independent learners today and in the future.

*******************************************************
Math: Students continue to learn about "Patterns and Relations" from the teachers in Joy Pod.  Parents will have the opportunity to work along  their children in the various rooms to share their learning at Student Led Conferences coming up on November 22 and 23.  Today we started the third rotation...

If your child is in inquiry groups "Nature-Mrs.Sigurdson" and "Animals-Mrs.Ross" we will be going for a coulee walk tomorrow at 9:15-10:45.  Students have been asked to dress for the weather.  We will also have time to eat our snack in the coulee.  We are hoping to find evidence of animals and document the nature we see, hear, feel and smell.   Please email these teachers if you have questions or concerns.  Thank You!

Literacy: After you've read the book:

- Ask your child to retell the story to you in their own words
- Talk about the book together, ask questions like:
  •             "What did you like about the book?
  •                   "What didn't you like about the book?
  •                   "Which part was your favorite?
  •                   "Did the story remind you of anything that we've read before?
  •                   "Did the story make you think of something that has happened to you?"

- Read the story again

Conversations after reading help to do one or all of these things:

Activate thought - "What do you think?"
Agitate thought - "Why do you think so?"
Require evidence - "How can you explain or prove this?"
