Joy Pod:
Today, we completed our work on developing observation skills and using prior knowledge to share what we "wonder" about images taken throughout the Tuscany community.  Here are some of our wonders from our inquiry work today.

"I wonder if the dog is taking a bath in the pond."
"I wonder if the bear is looking for food for its baby."
"I wonder if there are people living in the houses."
"I wonder if the fire station is open."
"I wonder if there are fire people in the building."
"I wonder if that wood on the ground is a bridge."
"I wonder when the garbage truck will come."
"I wonder if the moose is resting."
"I wonder if someone dropped the can or threw it on the ground."

Friday September 21st

We hope you had a great day off of schools. The teachers spent the day working together in their pods at an amazing location.  We were at the Calgary Reads Reading Place in Inglewood.  If you get a chance to check it out please do. It is an amazing place and everyone (including adults) goes home with a book.  If you have gently used books that your family are no longer using this is also a great place to take them. Check it out...

Monday, September 17th

Today we finished working on the details of our Austin's Beetles.  We are excited to share these with you all at the open house on Thursday. If you haven't signed up for a time slot, please do so.

Coulee Walk Tomorrow:
We are leaving the building at 9:00am.  We are planning to be gone until 11:00am.  Students need to be dressed to be outside this entire time.  This might mean, winter coats, snowpants, waterproof pants, mitts, hats and appropriate footwear.  Students will be bringing one snack with them that fits in their pocket and does not require a utensil.  Students will be putting the garbage from this snack back in their pocket for the remainder of the walk.

Today in Daily 5 we reviewed Read to Self and Read to Someone.  We talked about how to choose a partner and sitting EEKK with our partner.  Ask your child about cross checking while they are reading.

During our inquiry time today we worked on "I see, I think, I wonder".  Using pictures of nature and humans interacting we brainstormed all the things we could see.  Ask me what was in the pictures.

"JOY-ful" Day in Review:

JOY IGNITES:  Ask your child what IGNITE activities they have been exploring this week when starting their school day.  Students have had the choice to "read to self," "explore a variety of math activities," "Build" or "explore 6 different provocations (Can you make a line? Can you make a pattern? Can you draw a fall leaf? Can you make a fall tree? Can you mix colors? Can you stack 5 rocks?)."  We have found that having a soft start to our mornings has allowed our students to get ready for their learning and transition into school.

Big Inquiry Question:

Students watched a video on the Moose and baby moose that were walking in Tuscany recently, to get ourselves thinking about "How we impact the animals in the coulee?"  This video highlighted the overlapping of human contact with nature.  We will continue to spend time on discussing and exploring this question further next week on our "Coulee Walk."

Open House:
Beginning on Saturday at 8 a.m. parents will be able to sign up for an Open House time slot.  Our Eric Harvie Open House will begin in the gym with a welcome message and introductions of staff.  We will then move to your child's Pod (Joy) to view the different learning spaces that your child has been working in.  Your child will be able to share some of what they have been doing and their recent scientific drawing where they have been using feedback from their peers to draw a second, third or fourth attempt of a beetle.  We look forward to seeing all our families next week.

Reminders:
-Sept. 18: Coulee Walk (am) - Please email your child's homeroom teacher if you can volunteer
-Sept. 20: Eric Harvie School Open House and Early Dismissal Day (Please follow this link to access the School Conference)
-Sept. 21: No Classes for Students
-Sept. 26: Book Truck (this date may change as the book truck may not be available for the next few weeks)

Our "JOY" Day in Review:

What is Daily Five? The Daily Five is a literacy structure that allows for differentiation in the classroom.  There are five literacy tasks that teaches students independence and focuses on literacy.
5 Tasks of the Daily Five
1. Read to Self
2. Read to Someone
3. Work on Writing
4. Listen to Reading
5. Word Work
This week we have been working with students on "Read to Self" and "Read to Someone." Stay tuned as we move onto "Work on Writing" next week.  This literacy structure is designed to engage our students in both reading and writing.

Our Grade 1/2 Big Inquiry Question:

We are so lucky to have the Coulee near Eric Harvie School and so we hope to visit this special place as often as we can.  Our first big inquiry question driving our visits to the Coulee is
"How do we impact the animals in the coulee?" and "How do we know that animals have been here?"  Students today brainstormed and shared the animals that they have seen in the community of Tuscany and what animals they think live in the Coulee.  If you have never visited the Coulee, please take a stroll in the Coulee when you get sometime and enjoy the nature that is in our backyard.

Reminders:
-Sept. 13: Scholastic Book Club orders due
-Sept. 18: Coulee Walk (am) - Please email your child's homeroom teacher if you can volunteer
-Sept. 20: Eric Harvie School Open House (More information to come)
